DAILY NANCY UPDATE #93

This is the ninety-third in a series of DAILY NANCY UPDATES I will be posting until the amazing Nancy Neufeld Callaway is in full remission and we have kicked her leukemia on its ass.

BREAKING NEWS

Since Nancy's pre-dawn seizure yesterday, she is still unresponsive. Early this morning, I met with Dr. Forman (her lead physician and the Chair of Hematology/Oncology) and Dr. Prakash, the Chief of Neurology at City of Hope. Both doctors believe her condition is temporary and reversible. They are stopping one of the anti-rejection drugs from her transplant, which can affect the brain. They are adding a new anti-seizure medication, since yesterday's EEG indicated she might still be experiencing some minor seizures. They are slowly bringing her sodium levels back up, which caused the major seizure when they dropped too low. And they’re continuing to treat the virus she has, which causes a form of encephalitis. Their mutual belief is that those four moves will collectively bring her back on line. Could be two days. Could be two weeks. All we can do is be patient and keep the faith.

It is absolutely brutal to see her this way. We all know Nancy as loving, vibrant, funny, fit, active, and sharp as a tack. But right now, she is somewhere else... cast adrift. I promise to stay by her side, doing anything I can to help her find her way back to shore. And I will tell each and every one of you as soon as she returns.
